Every dental office in Ahwatukee seems to have a new patient offer, and most of them are vague about what you actually get. Ours is $99 for an exam, X-rays, and a cleaning at Kokopelli Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. Here is what that covers, what the visit is like, and who it is for.
What the $99 includes
At our Ahwatukee office on Chandler Boulevard, the special covers:
- •A comprehensive exam with Dr. Kaur or Dr. Thompson. Every tooth, your gums, your bite, your jaw joints, and an oral cancer screening of the soft tissues.
- •The X-rays we need to see what an exam cannot, usually bitewings of the back teeth plus individual images of anything that needs a closer look.
- •A regular cleaning with one of our hygienists, when your gums are healthy enough for one.
The cleaning caveat is worth a paragraph. A regular cleaning is for gums that are basically healthy. If you have not been to a dentist in years and your gums bleed when you brush, there may be tartar below the gumline and the beginning of gum disease. The right treatment for that is a deep cleaning, which is a separate procedure with a separate fee. If that is what I see, I will show you, explain why, and give you the cost before we schedule it. The exam and X-rays are still $99.
What the visit is like
We hold an 80 minute block for new patients so the exam and the cleaning fit in one trip. If our hygiene schedule cannot fit 80 minutes on the day you want, we split it into two shorter visits. The price does not change.
You fill out your health history, online ahead of time or on paper at the front desk. The hygienist takes your X-rays and does your cleaning. Then the dentist comes in, pulls your X-rays up on the screen, examines you, and walks you through what we found.
Our approach is conservative but comprehensive. That means I will not recommend treatment you do not need, and I will not skip over something because it is not bothering you yet. If a tooth has a small cavity, you will see it on the X-ray and we will talk about whether to watch it or fill it. If a tooth is fine, I will say so.
What happens after
If your mouth is healthy, we book your next cleaning and send you on your way. For most adults that is every six months.
If you need treatment, you leave with a written plan and a cost estimate. Insured patients see what their plan is expected to pay and what their share is. Patients without insurance see our fee and the payment options, including monthly financing through Cherry or CareCredit for bigger treatment. Nothing on the plan is scheduled until you say so.
Who the $99 special is for
It is for new patients who do not have dental insurance. If you have insurance, we bill your plan for the same visit, and most PPO plans cover a new patient exam, X-rays, and cleaning well. You can check whether we are in-network with your plan before you book.
It is a good fit if it has been a while since your last dental visit and you want an honest picture without a big bill, or if you are new to Ahwatukee and want to meet us before you decide on a dentist.
Staying with us without insurance
Patients without insurance can join our Ahwatukee in-house membership plan. It is $299 a year plus a $79 activation fee and includes three exams, two cleanings, fluoride treatment, the X-rays you need, and 20 percent off other treatment. It is only for patients who do not have dental insurance and is not insurance. Ask our team to confirm enrollment and renewal terms.
