I went to my dentist asking if I can get porcelain veneers. I do have a couple of semi crooked front teeth, and I wanted fix that as well as get my teeth whiter. He told me that I could get porcelain veneers, but I would also need teeth whitening and Invisalign. I’m not sure I want to pay for three procedures. Is that what everyone who gets porcelain veneers does? I thought I’d read that porcelain veneers could make teeth look straight. Am I misunderstanding something?

Dear Iris,

Teeth Bleaching Trays
I am glad you wrote. You are correct that porcelain veneers can make your teeth look straight. Porcelain veneers require an expert cosmetic dentist to do the work. To make the teeth look straight requires even more expertise. With such a dentist, Invisalign would not be necessary. However, I would not push this dentist to do it. If he is suggesting Invisalign, it means he is not comfortable doing the procedure. If you forced it, you would not like the results.
That being said, I don’t even think that you need to get porcelain veneers. You said that all you were looking to do was to straighten those teeth and make them whiter. There are two ways to do that. The first is with porcelain veneers and teeth whitening. The reason for the teeth whitening is so that you don’t have to place veneers on both your upper and lower teeth. This way you just need the veneers on the top teeth, which are the ones visible when you smile. This is a great option if there is more that you want to change about your teeth than just the color and making it look straight. It can also change the shape and size of your teeth.
There is a second option, which is to get Invisalign and add some teeth whitening gel. I would recommend this for your option. It’s a simpler procedure, which any dentist should be able to do. It accomplishes your goals. Even better, it is much less expensive than the veneers procedure.
