I’m allergic to most metals and need a crown on a back tooth. I wanted to get an all-porcelain crown but my dentist said they’re not strong enough for back teeth. He doesn’t think my allergies will be a problem. I do. Are there any alternatives for back teeth than the porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns?
Adina
Dear Adina,
Metal-Free Crowns for Back Teeth
While it is true that your biting forces are too strong for an all-porcelain crown, you can get a zirconia crown placed on a back tooth. These are metal-free crowns which are strong enough. Zirconia is sometimes called ceramic steel because of its strength. These can now be made into crowns and used on back teeth.
Finding Your New Dentist
I’m going to say you need a different dentist. There are two big reasons for this. The first is your dentist doesn’t seem to care about your allergies. He’s blowing off your concerns and possibly a threat to your health. Even metal sensitivities can cause a lifetime of problems.
The second concern I have is he doesn’t seem to have kept up in his field. He should have known there were other options. Maybe he only takes the minimum amount of continuing education and is just going through the motions.
When you’re searching for a new dentist I want you to look at their website. Make sure they have newer procedures listed. Then, check their reviews. You don’t just want a dentist who knows their field, but one who is good with patients and listens to their concerns.
